Ben Wosk

Oral history interview with Ben Wosk who was born in 1913 in a town near Odessa. He recalls how his Great-Grandfather Moshe served in the Czarist army for 25 years. Ben and the family emigrated to Canada after Ben, his father and many other Jews had been arrested on multiple occasions with no evidence.

Joseph Segal

Oral history interview with businessman and philanthropist Joseph Segal who was born in Alberta, 1925. During the Second World War he spent two years in the infantry and a year as part of the postwar occupational army in Germany. He made his wealth buying and selling companies: Zellers, Hudson's Bay Company, Gamble Canada and dozens more. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 1989. He joined Simon Fraser University's Board in 1981, spearheading the SFU Downtown Campus and has been its Chancellor.

Murray & David Goldman

Oral history interview with Murray & David Goldman, Murray's family came from Poland and Murray was born in 1920 in Montreal. He owned and worked a number of clothing stores in Vancouver and New Westminster. Known for his innovation in advertising.

David was born in 1950 in Vancouver. He became a partner in his father's Goldman & Bus Stop Jeans businesses and David's son is also a partner. The business is now called Goldman & Son.

Part 1 Summary:
00:00: The interviewer, Alysa Routtenberg, introduces herself and Janice Masur who is being interviewed about her former father-in-law’s scrap metal business called Felix Salvage.
00:30: Masur was married to Wayne Freedman whose father, Felix owned the business with his brother Ben. She describes where the business was located in Surrey and the people who worked there. Masur also recounts some of what happened to the business including a fire after Felix Freedman passed away and Wayne took over the ownership.
5:52: Masur had her own career and not much to do with the business which was eventually sold.
7:37: Masur describes some of the Freedman family life and where her former husband was raised.
10:01: Sabie Freedman, Wayne’s mother, traded in stocks.
11:08: Routtenberg asks what Wayne’s work life and the business were like when he was in charge.
12:17: The speakers discuss Felix Salvage’s competition as well as the buying and selling of scrap metal.
15:03: The business was sold around the year 1980. Wayne did not work after selling the business.

David Kaplan

Oral interview with David Kaplan. Interviewed by Bill Gruenthal. David talks about his family's involvement with the steel industry and the Jewish Botanical Gardens. Eventually settling in Vancouver, David opened a very successful R&D tax consultation firm and later on became heavily involved with the Jewish Family Services Agency. He also discusses Jewish education in South Africa.
