Dr. Bluma Tischler

Oral history interview with Dr. Bluma Tischler, who was born 1924 in Baranowicz, Poland - now Baranavichy in Belarus. Bluma and her husband Issac attended medical school at the University of Odessa, than studied in Munich, Germany. Bulma and Issac wanted to emigrate to the United States but due to their quota's being full they decided to come to Canada.

Fred & Fannie Horodezky

Oral history interview with Fred & Fannie Horodezky. Fred was born Belarus,1887 and Fannie (nee , Applebaum) was born in Kiev, 1890. The Horodezky's speak of growing up in Eastern Europe and farming in the early twentieth century. Fred took Boy Scouts to meet Lieutenant General Baden Powell, founder of the Scouting movement.

Jack Austin

Oral history interview with Jack Austin who was born in Calgary in 1932 and worked with the BC Liberal party with Arthur Liang on campaigns and on trade negotiations between Canada and US related to water. In Ottawa he worked with Paul Martin and Arthur Liang as well as Prime Ministers Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Jean Chretien in the energy and natural resources sector. He was awarded Mexico's Order of the Aztec Eagle for his services.

Jessie Anne Allman

Oral history interview with Jessie Anne Allman. Jessie worked for 'Children's Aid Society' and the Hadassah, helping to establish over 20 new chapters in Vancouver and Saskatchewan. Worked with the Jewish Family Service Agency.

Jessie's mother started the 'Quick Help Society' and was a member of the Hadassah.

Sally Tall

Oral history interview with Sally Tall who was born in Austria in 1900. Sally was involved in the Hadassah in Montreal and volunteer Jewish General Hospital during WWII.

Sam Lipson

Oral history interview with Sam Lipson who was born in Russia in 1913. Involved in the Association of Professional Engineers, the Jewish Community Centre, Parliamentary Union, Beth Israel Synagogue, Talmud Torah and the Canadian Jewish Congress - on the Jewish Committee, the Educational Committee and the Joint Community Relations Committee. Sam graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

Seymour Levitan

Oral history interview with Seymour Levitan who was born in Philadelphia, 1936. Seymour was drafted into the American army in 1961 but missed the Vietnam war, pursuing a Ph.D and teaching English at the University of British Columbia. Seymour helped organize the Jewish Film Festival, helped launch the Chelm Film Series.

Sonia Sara Bellas

Oral History interview with Sonia Sara Bellas, who immigrated to Canada in November, 1925, from a small town near Kiev, in Russia. Her family, unable to move to the United States, settled in Winnipeg. The purpose of immigration was to live closer to family that had settled in Philadelphia. Sonia attended school until grade 11, after which she went on to work in laundry and dry cleaning. She met her husband in 1940, and they were married on December 26, 1942, at his parents' home in Vancouver. They had several children together. Whilst living in Vancouver, Sonia worked in clothing retail. After her retirement, she spent much of her time with her husband and children and fondly remembers entertaining guests at her home. At the time of the interview, she enjoys attending services with her family for high holidays, having lunch with her children and grandchildren weekly, and was a member of Seniors Club. Her son is also present at the interview and offers additional insight to his mother's life as well as his experience growing up with his mother and father.
