Rachel Morris

Oral history interview with Rachel Morris (nee Seidelman) who was born in Vancouver, B.C. She married Dr. William Morris, one of first Jewish physicians in city. Tape includes interviews with Rebecca Kemp and Jeannette Nuttall.

Jeanette Nuttall

Oral history interview with Jeanette Nuttall who arrived in Victoria in June 1890 from Nottingham, England with her husband, Harry, who served in the Canadian army during the First World War. She was a member of Hadassah and B'nai B'rith in Victoria.

Harry Toban

Oral history interview with Harry Toban who was born in Lithuania in 1895, but family emigrated to Canada in 1911 because his uncle had gone to Montreal in 1895 and his aunts had come to Vancouver from Montreal in 1905. Mr. Toban primarily discusses being a business owner and helping the development of Schara Tzedeck Synagogue on Oak Street.

I.W. Chess and Jeanette Chess

Oral history interview with I.W. who started Chess Brothers Wholesale Fruit and Produce Company, which ran for almost 50 years. He lived in the East End of Vancouver, near Heatley Avenue. I.W. and his brother, were among the founders of Schara Tzedeck Synagogue.

Norman & Bernice Brown

Oral history interview with Norman Brown who arrived in Vancouver in 1907 and Bernice immigrated to Vancouver after marrying Norman in San Fransico in 1930. Norman attended Talmud Torah school when he was a child. Both were involved in a variety of Jewish community organizations. Bernice was president of both Federated Jewish Women and National Council of Jewish Women. Norman was president of the Canadian Jewish Council. He discusses memories of early life in Strathcona and Mount Pleasant. Interview ends with a discussion of photographs.

Isaac Lipovsky

Oral history interview with Isaac Lipovsky who was born in Russia in 1902 but the family emigrated to Winnipeg in 1905 after Issac's brother was born. Issac's father fought in the Russo-Japanese War, finding work at Red River Sheet Metal Works in Winnipeg, later opening B.C. Ceiling and Roofing Company once the family relocated in 1910. After working through a number of businesses, mainly concession stands and selling candy, started working for Woodward's Department Stores in 1932.

Sam Lipson

Oral history interview with Sam Lipson who was born in Russia in 1913. Involved in the Association of Professional Engineers, the Jewish Community Centre, Parliamentary Union, Beth Israel Synagogue, Talmud Torah and the Canadian Jewish Congress - on the Jewish Committee, the Educational Committee and the Joint Community Relations Committee. Sam graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. David Aberle

Oral history interview with Dr. David Aberle. The interview contains discussions of Dr. Aberle's non-Jewish upbringing, anthropological fieldwork with the Navajo. It includes his experience with Sen. McCarthy accusing him of being a Soviet spy during the Red Scare, his time in the army during the Second World War surveying the results of the strategic bombings of Japan and Germany. Dr. Aberle is the founder of the Jews for a Just Peace. He worked at the University of Michigan and University of British Columbia in the anthropology department.

Gloria Harris (Steinberg)

Oral history interview with Gloria Steinberg Harris who was born in Vancouver in 1924. Her father worked in the Vancouver shipyards during the Second World War. Gloria worked in the department of fisheries until she married, where she worked in an office. Gloria was active with the Council of Jewish Women and the Beth Israel Sisterhood Board.
