David Kaplan

Oral interview with David Kaplan. Interviewed by Bill Gruenthal. David talks about his family's involvement with the steel industry and the Jewish Botanical Gardens. Eventually settling in Vancouver, David opened a very successful R&D tax consultation firm and later on became heavily involved with the Jewish Family Services Agency. He also discusses Jewish education in South Africa.

Eva Prentice

Oral history interview with Eva Prentice who was born in Hungary in 1911. The family emigrated to Canada because of the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938 while they had been in Palestine for a chess tournament. Therefore they spent time in Zurich waiting to emigrate rather than return to Vienna. Eva's husband John owned a veneer plant in New Westminster but was converted to plywood to build Mosquito bombers after 1939. This became Canadian Forest Products, now known as CanFor

David Rubin

Oral history interview with David Rubin who was born in Transylvania, 1923. He was drafted into a working / bomb clearing battalion of the Hungarian Army in 1944. David chose to come to Canada in 1957 because he had heard it was the country of the future. The Canadian consulate chose Vancouver as his destination. Taught in Ottawa and was recommended to be the reader at Beth Israel Synagogue.

Paul Heller

Oral history interview with Paul Heller who was born in Poland in 1911. His father side comes from Poland whereas his mother's family originates from Lithuania. Paul discusses his involvement in Poland's forestry and later estate management, the rise of Hitler, Poland being attacked in 1939 and the lengths involved to escape Poland, retrieve his mother and emigrate to Canada. Paul married Edwina in 1936.

Sam Heller

Oral history interview with Sam Heller, who was born in Poland, later moving to England than emigrating to Canada in 1940. Sam's father Horace was one of Poland's top lumber producers, Sam tried to get into the lumber trade on the east coast of Canada but was impeded, therefore moved to Vancouver. Besides Sam's involvement in the Forestry industry, he was involved in the Zionist Association.

Oral history interview with Alfred Evans on Harry Evans, the latter of which who was born in 1878. Harry is one the the founding members of the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue in Vancouver.
