Harry Smith

Oral history interview with Harry Smith who was born in Russia in 1896. When the family emigrated to Canada in 1905, their family name was changed to Shumacher. Harry with his family (married in 1918) to Vancouver in 1932 for the education of his daughter. Was involved with Friends of Hebrew University.

David Kaplan

Oral interview with David Kaplan. Interviewed by Bill Gruenthal. David talks about his family's involvement with the steel industry and the Jewish Botanical Gardens. Eventually settling in Vancouver, David opened a very successful R&D tax consultation firm and later on became heavily involved with the Jewish Family Services Agency. He also discusses Jewish education in South Africa.

Louis Zimmerman

Oral history interview with Louis Zimmerman who was born in Toronto in 1911. He was stationed overseas in England and Scotland, operating England's coastal radar chain between 1941 - 1945. He discusses Vancouver's Jewish Community Centre and the start of his career in Vancouver in 1948. Was recognized as a "servant and master" of the Jewish community in Vancouver for his outstanding record of service.

Gertrude (Gertie) Zack

An Oral history interview with Gertrude (Gertie) Zack (nee Fouks) who was born in 1918 in Canada. Gertie was involved in United Jewish Appeal's Women's Division, the Council of Jewish Women; and rolling bandages for the Red Cross during the Second World War.

An interview with Sonia Rose, who was born in England and arrived in Victoria in 1918. She describes her involvement in Jewish community life in Victoria. Sonia was active in Eastern Star and B'nai B'rith, a charter member of Hadassah, member of Red Cross, Canadian Club, Musical Arts Society, Hospital Auxiliary, and Council of Canadian Citizenship. She also wrote a Victoria column for the Jewish Western Bulletin. Sonia begins the interview discussing her family hosting Rabbi J.H. Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, during his visit to Victoria in 1921.

Rachel Morris and Harry Seidelman

Oral history interview with the Seidelman family who emigrated to Canada from Russia. Rachel Morris (nee Seidelman) and her brother Harry Seidelman describe being relatively isolated from the Jewish community as young people but they met more Jewish people in high school and became increasingly involved in community activities. Rachel's husband William Morris trained as doctor and had a private practice for a time. Rachel was involved with the Council of Jewish Women, served on the Vancouver Jewish Community Chest board. The CJW worked with the Red Cross during the Second World War.

Joshua Checov

Oral history interview with Joshua Checov who was born in 1891 in a small village in Russia. He was the only member of his family to serve in the Russian army during the First World War. Mr. Checov met Czar Nicholas during his time in the army. Later when he emigrated to Canada he spent a great deal of effort working across numerous organizations; Anti-Defamation League, Histadrut, etc and was a active supporter of Zionism.
