Ferguson Point Tea House, Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia

Photograph depicts the Ferguson Point Tea House in Stanley Park. The tea house was originally an army mess hall after World War Two when Stanley Park was something of a dwindling fortification. In the 1950s it was converted to a tea house.

Isaac Messinger

Oral history interview with Isaac Messinger. He was born in Poland in 1929. During the war he was moved to Siberia, Russia. Later in the war he became a chauffeur for a General in the Polish Army, he was 16 or 17 at the time. After the war he ended up in Germany and was a pickpocketing. He got sent to an American school in Germany that was teaching children that were going to immigrate to North America, but he couldn’t sit still in class, so they gave him a job in the garage where he learnt English with the Americans that worked there. He came to Canada at age 18 or 19. He got a job as a tin smith, then he got a job as a carnie and made his way to Vancouver where he worked at the PNE. He eventually opened a steak Restaurant and ran it for a while. He talks about Casinos and Las Vegas. He talks about how he met his wife and their life together.

Peter Barnett

Oral history interview with Peter Barnett. Peter and Jeffrey Barnett are twin brothers who went into a number of business ventures including restaurants, clubs and property investments. They are best known for being the founders and owners of: Pizza Patio, Elephant and Castle, Ole Cantina, the first topless club in Canada, the first discothèque in Richmond, etc.

They are also very involved in community (both Jewish and non-Jewish) organizations. They were both heavily involved in the Variety Club telethon for years; Peter Barnett was the founder of Variety Club #1047 and past Variety Club World President (and the youngest world president of Variety Club). Jeffrey is very involved with the BC Restaurant Association and the JCC's (Jewish Community Centre) annual Sports Dinner.

They are both 2007 BC Restaurant Hall of Fame Inductees in the Pioneer Category (Pioneers of the BC restaurant industry either retired or deceased).

Peter is a past president of the BC Restaurant Association.

Peter was one of the founding members of Hebrew Free Loan Association and was a member from 1979-2008.

Peter is a past president of Tourism Vancouver.
