Norman & Bernice Brown

Oral history interview with Norman Brown who arrived in Vancouver in 1907 and Bernice immigrated to Vancouver after marrying Norman in San Fransico in 1930. Norman attended Talmud Torah school when he was a child. Both were involved in a variety of Jewish community organizations. Bernice was president of both Federated Jewish Women and National Council of Jewish Women. Norman was president of the Canadian Jewish Council. He discusses memories of early life in Strathcona and Mount Pleasant. Interview ends with a discussion of photographs.

Esther Brandt

Oral history interview with Esther Brandt who was born in 1932 in Belgium. She was highly involved in a number of Jewish organizations; Pioneer Women, a member of the Schara Tzedeck Board. She outlived her husband who had survived the Nazis concentration camps.

Oral history interview with Barbara Weiser, born in 1946 in Quebec. She worked for Eaton's and a number of other companies as a Buyer, travelling across Canada. She is a prolific writer and researcher, having published 4 books / papers on the Jewish community with focuses on Synagogues and Holocaust memorials.

Stacey Lederman

Oral Interview with Stacey Lederman for the JMABC Artists Scribe. Interviewed by Perry Seidelman. Stacey talks briefly about her family history and growing up in Tsawwassen. Her post-secondary education led her to working in business and finance, but having children changed her career path after not working for more than a decade. Stacey discusses her introduction to recreational art classes in Vancouver and how attention from peers quickly saw her realize her talent, and also book her first art show. She describes her work as mixed-media, which includes using different mediums such as acrylics, ink, resin, and photography. Stacey talks about how she is drawn to edgy, colourful pieces including graffiti which can be seen in her own art pieces. Stacey talks about the artists who inspire her as the motivations behind her pieces. Stacey discusses the theme of hearts in her work, art crawls, and her favourite pieces of work. She speaks about how visiting Israel inspired her, and how things like real life, emotion and intuition informs her art practice.

Topics include historical notes, definitions on who is Jewish, growth rate of the Jewish community of Greater Vancouver, immigrants, inter-provincial migrants, geographic distribution of Jewish members within Greater Vancouver, age structure of the Vancouver Jewish community, seniors, living arrangements of Jewish people in Vancouver, socio-economic characteristics, patterns of Jewish identification, intermarriage, Holocaust survivors, Jewish women and inequality in the labour force, the persistence of invisible poverty, and the emerging agenda.

Mrs. Blanche Macdonald

Blanche Macdonald (née Brillon) (11 May 1931 - 8 June 1985) was a Canadian Métis born in Faust, Alberta of French and First Nations heritage. She launched her career as the winner of Miss English Bay in 1949 before becoming involved in the support of the rights and culture of Aboriginal peoples as well as numerous women's organizations. Blanche was a model, entrepreneur and native rights activist. In 1957 Blanche married John Dickson Macdonald and they had two children: daughter Alexis Seto (née Macdonald) and son Allan Macdonald.

Blanche developed the Blanche Macdonald Institute, a modeling agency and school of fashion in Vancouver, BC. Her career and self-development programs were founded on the philosophy of encouraging people to aspire to their highest potential through personal development. After her death in 1985, the institute was purchased by Lillian Lim who further developed the school and eventually renamed the institute the Blanche Macdonald Centre in the late 90's. Today, Blanche Macdonald Centre is a private college that provide careers in fashion, hairstyling, aesthetics/spa and nail. The college has two campuses, the original campus is located in City Square Mall and the other on Robson Street both in the city of Vancouver.
