Gloria Harris (Steinberg)

Oral history interview with Gloria (Steinberg) Harris who was born in Vancouver in 1924. Her father came from Odessa, Russia. Maternal grandparents were from Bulgaria and Istanbul. Worked for Department of Fisheries in her twenties.

Howard and Josephine Mallek

Oral History of Howard and Josephine Mallek. Howard grew up in Victoria. His parents owned a ladieswear shop and were a big part of the community. Howard and Josephine met during medical school at McGill. Josephine was the first Female staff doctor at St. Paul’s. Howard was the first Jewish department head at St. Paul’s. They both helped form the Jewish Medical Journal Club in Vancouver. Howard talks about his brother, Lawrence, a conductor, pianist, and organ player.

Jessica Freedman

Oral Interview with Jessica Freedman for the JMABC Artists Scribe. Interviewed by Daniella Givon via remote Zoom call. Jessica was born in Montreal, but recalls moving around as a child to Israel and back to Canada where she grew up in Calgary. She explains immediate family history which included her mother who was a professional actor, and her father and brother who are musicians. She was primarily introduced to the arts through dance and music, though eventually was trained in visual arts at Simon Fraser University. She describes her different careers as a dancer, choreographer, accountant and yoga studio owner and instructor, but pursued arts full time after quitting her job to take care of her mother who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jessica explains how her painting style transitioned from realism to more expressive abstracts over time, and how she is inspired by emotions and colour. She also discusses how she is motivated by nature and chaos, collaborating on commissions, and the Jewish concept of tikkun olam, having her art contribute as a light to the world.

Leah Markovitch

She recalls the start up and operation of their shop, the tweaking of Jewish recipes, and the changing population and food scene in Vancouver. Leah talks extensively about evolving Jewish cuisine, culture, and identity.

Naomi Katz

Oral history interview with Naomi Katz who was born in Durban, 1924. Her mother, Rachel Newman, was born in 1900 and her father, Emphram Levey, was born in 1895. Naomi's first job was as a stenographer in Vancouver, later she took courses in teaching English as a Second Language, where Naomi found work at the Vancouver School Board. Was head of Directions ESL conference and helped produce 'Blue Brief', presented to the government in 1981, it focused on settlement services in multicultural societies. Naomi participated in the Parent-Teacher conferences ,Canadian Jewish Congress forum, the Jewish Historical Society and started the West Coast Reader for non-native English speakers.
