Letter - December 24, 1916

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated December 24, 1916. Sent from Seaford, Sussex, England to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. In the letter, Private Seidelman also mentions that he is now being quarantined for fear of measles. Private Seidelman also suggests that the war might be over soon based on information from “Lloyd’s Weekly News”, a London newspaper. Private Seidelman notes as well, that he received a parcel of items from the "University of B.C."

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated December 31, 1916. Sent from Seaford, Sussex, England to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. Private Seidelman writes that he is still in quarantine. In addition, the letter mentions another letter to Harry Dalkin, and Private Seidelman specifically talks about how mail from Europe to North America is censored.

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated February 11, 1917. (Assumed sent from Europe) to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. Private Seidelman reports that two large Transatlantic liners, carrying about 12,000 sacks of mail, were torpedoed and sunk by German submarines. He also reports that the United States has broken off diplomatic relations with Germany.

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated February 18, 1917. Sent from "Somewhere in France" to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. Private Seidelman mentions that he has changed battalions, and is now part of the 46th Battalion. Private Seidelman also talks about purchasing "The Dayfield Body Shield" for use in battle and gives a description of this item.

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated February 27, 1917. Sent from "Somewhere in France" to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. Envelope has stickers reading "Opened by Censor". The letter is written in pencil and in two places on page 4, words have been erased by censors. In the letter, Private Seidelman mentions hearing news that "the Huns" (the Austro-Hungarian Empire) "are out of Baxaume and are pressed further by the British", and makes a guess that "the Huns" will be in "disastrous retreat" soon.

Letter from Private Edward Joseph Seidelman, dated February 3, 1917. Sent from "Somewhere in Europe" to Rachel Seidelman of Vancouver. In the letter, Private Seidelman mentions Allied ships and American ships in the Atlantic Ocean being sunk by Germany, and he makes a prediction that the United States may soon declare war on Germany.
