Oral History Interview with Ronald (Ron) Appleton, accompanied by his wife Brenda Appleton for the JMABC Artists Scribe. Interviewed by Carol Herbert. Ron Appleton was born in Vancouver and describes his youth working with his father who was an auctioneer and arts dealer. This experience introduced him to Inuit art which became the focus of his life’s work showing and selling works of Indigenous artists in his family-owned and operated galleries. Ron and Brenda describe the relationships they formed with Indigenous artists but also many art collectors, especially Jewish diaspora, around the world. Ron shares anecdotes related to prominent Canadian artists, as well as unique art pieces he’s seen across the decades in the business.

Oral history interview with Nathan Divinsky who was born 1925 in Winnipeg. Notably Nathan's great grandfather Joe Nathanson acted as buying agent for General Baskakov in Russia. Nathan recieved in PhD in Mathematics in Chicago. He had lunch with Enrico Fermi. He taught at the University of Manitoba and than the University of British Columbia, where he became deeply embedded with the Vancouver community.

Oral history interview with Goldie Angel who was born in Poland and arrived in Winnipeg in 1909. She belonged to B'nai B'rith in Vancouver.

Oral history interview with the Seidelman family who emigrated to Canada from Russia. Rachel Morris (nee Seidelman) and her brother Harry Seidelman describe being relatively isolated from the Jewish community as young people but they met more Jewish people in high school and became increasingly involved in community activities. Rachel's husband William Morris trained as doctor and had a private practice for a time. Rachel was involved with the Council of Jewish Women, served on the Vancouver Jewish Community Chest board. The CJW worked with the Red Cross during the Second World War.

Oral history interview with Sam Barrett who was born in Winnipeg in 1897, fought during the First World War where he sustained a life-long eye injury.

Oral history interview with David Nemetz. David was born in Russia in the year 1894. He discusses his childhood in Russia prior to his immigration to Canada in 1912, when he arrived in Winnipeg. David describes his involvement in various Zionist groups in each city he lived in, such as the Young Zionist group and the Habonim Lodge in BC. His involvement in Canadian Zionist movements eventually lead to the establishment of Camp Hatikvah.

Oral history interview with Dr. Isaac Stoffman who was born in Winnipeg, 1916. He graduated from the University of Manitoba, began his Doctor's practice in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan. He than enlisted in the Canadian army in 1943 as a medical officer, stationed in Regina Military Hospital and Dundern military training camp than as a psychiatrist in London Ontario.

Oral history interview with Anne & Jack Black who were born in Toronto and Winnipeg respectively. Jack was an electrician and later worked in a number of local Vancouver businesses. Anne was involved in numerous organizations, she was the chairman of the Kinsmen Club; Heart Foundation; Diabetic Association and Young Judea.

Oral history interview with Gallia Chud. Gallia Chud was born in Staraya Russa, Russia in the year 1923. She briefly describes her childhood in the town prior to her immigration to Canada in December, 1929 at the age of six. Her family settled in Winnipeg where she completed her studies and met her husband, Ben. They married in 1943 and were reunited in 1945 as Ben had been serving in the Canadian military during World War II. Ben was invited to teach at the Peretz School in Vancouver during its establishment and they moved to the city in October, 1945. Both Gallia and Ben were involved with the school for most of their lives while residing in Vancouver, with Ben serving as principal for fifteen years and Gallia serving as president for five while maintaining involvement with the PTA the whole time. They had two daughters. Ben passed away in 1986.
