Congregation Emanu-El manuscripts

The series consists of early material relating to the establishment of Congregation Emanu-El. These five manuscripts are some of the earliest records extant of any activities of the first Jewish congregation on the West Coast of Canada.

Letters from Abraham Blackman to his brother Morris, Jewish merchants in colonial British Columbia

Blackman, Abraham. Eighteen autograph letters, 1-6 pages each, dating from 30 April 1862-18 February 1864, all but one from Victoria. Group of letters to his brother Morris, discussing the expansion of the family mercantile business from Victoria to New Westminster and thence to the Cariboo. The final letter includes a power of attorney for Morris to act on Abraham's behalf. The letters discuss the financial state of the business, especially in New Westminster, shipping details for dispatching goods, business conditions in the Colony and family matters.

Blackman came to Victoria, B.C. in 1858 or 1859 from Stockton, California, to establish a hardware business on Yates Street. He was a prime mover in organizing the Jewish community in Victoria. In May 1859, he helped establish the first Jewish cemetery in Western Canada; in June, he became founding president of the First Hebrew Benevolent Society, the first Jewish organization in Western Canada; he was the first treasurer of the Jewish Congregation in Victoria. He founded the Masonic Lodge in Victoria and arranged for the first public ceremony of the Masons, the laying of the cornerstone of the first Synagogue. He returned to California in the 1870's, dying there in 1888.

Private Seidelman’s war letters and bereavement

This series contains letters written by Private Edward Joseph Seidelman to his family from July 1916 until his death in October 1917. The letters were written when Private Seidelman was stationed in Camp Hughes, Manitoba; Seaford, Sussex, England; and “Somewhere in France”. The series also contains Private Seidelman’s death certificate and letters from the Canadian and British government to his family after his death. Published material includes a published obituary from the “Daily Province”, Vancouver, British Columbia and a Western Universities Battalion newsletter from Camp Hughes, Manitoba, published October 21, 1916.

Morris' letters to Rose

Series consists of love letters written from Morris to Rose during 1921. Also includes discussion of Morris' law practice and his work with various Jewish organizations in Vancouver. Morris sometimes addresses his letters to Rosana.

Assorted unidentified

Series contains materials for which a familial connection could not be ascertained, mainly photographs of unidentified persons or places.

Victoria Lodge #365 (1886-[18-?]) and Victoria Lodge #758 (1914-1925)

Series consists of two items: booklet containing ten completed membership forms for Victoria Lodge #365, dated September 1886, registering Charter members of the Lodge; bound volume of minutes of the Victoria Lodge #365, the volume being shared with a successor B’nai B’rith Lodge, Victoria Lodge #758.

Geyerhahn family

Series contains photographs of the family of George Geyerhahn, the husband of Mimi Lowy. Photographs are mostly from family gatherings such as weddings.

Family Correspondence

Series consists of letters exchanged between Mr. & Mrs. Fromson and Ann’s parents, as well as letters exchanged between Ann and her sister Lillian.
