Elaine Charkow

Oral History interview with Elaine Charkow. Elaine was born in Russia. Her family emigrated when she was 8. They first stopped in Winnipeg where her father worked in the grain business. They moved to Vancouver in 1926. During the 1930's Her mother took in 2 refugees from China. Her father was one of the founders of the Vancouver Free Loan Association. Elaine talks about the importance of the Jewish Community Center on 11th and Oak. Elaine instrumental in finding housing for Polish immigrants. She worked with B’nai B’rith Girls, United Jewish Appeal, and Hadassah.

An interview with Samuel and Anne Sussel. Sam was born in 1894 in Germany, he and Anne moved to Edmonton because his sister in law and her husband had settled in Vegreville, Alberta.

Walter Gumprich

Oral interview with Walter Gumprich. Interviewed by Nikky McCarvill for SLAIS Oral History class.

Walter was born in Muenster Germany in 1933, shortly after Hitler came to power. He immigrated to Scotland with his family when he was six and a half, just two weeks before the outbreak of the second world war. As an adult, he moved to Saskatoon, Sask., where he lived with his life Lois and raised four children. He spent is career in the agricultural feed business and was involved in volunteer work with the Chevra Kadisha in Saskatoon.
