Oral history interview with Horace Raphael who was born in Vancouver, 1920. His grandfather was born in Germany, 1832, and his grandmother was born in Poland. While his mother was born in Winnipeg and his father was born in Poland but left for Vancouver between 1904-05.

Oral History interview with Elaine Charkow. Elaine was born in Russia. Her family emigrated when she was 8. They first stopped in Winnipeg where her father worked in the grain business. They moved to Vancouver in 1926. During the 1930's Her mother took in 2 refugees from China. Her father was one of the founders of the Vancouver Free Loan Association. Elaine talks about the importance of the Jewish Community Center on 11th and Oak. Elaine instrumental in finding housing for Polish immigrants. She worked with B’nai B’rith Girls, United Jewish Appeal, and Hadassah.

Oral history interview with Bill Gruenthal who was born in 1935 in Netanya, Palestine. His father's side is from Silesia, Germany and his mother's side comes from Lower Saxony and Aachen. Bill has been a part of the Jewish National Fund and worked for the Vancouver Board of Trade. Bill discusses tensions between Arab and Jewish communities growing up.

Oral history interview with John Gort who was born in Breslau, Germany. Escaped Gestapo while in school in Frankfurt in November 1939 due to local police. He went on to study in England but quit and than volunteered for the British Army. He worked in London, England; Northern Rhodesia and Vancouver in medical technician and psychiatric nursing. The interview also discusses John's study of German philosophers.

Oral history interview with Robert Jacoby whose family emigrated from Germany to Washington in 1892. Robert's father worked as a jeweler and moved to Vancouver in 1905 to continue, bringing the entire family up in 1912. Robert worked in the jewelry trade as well, eventually going into business with a brother.

Oral history interview with Lisa Komar who was born in Berlin, 1918. LIsa worked as a nurse in England where she met and married her husband Leon. They moved in 1949 to Fort St. John's to start up a medical practice. She has been a member of Hadassah since 1957 and its archivist.

Oral history interview with Izzy Fraeme, who was born 1918 in Oradea, Romania, a predominantly Jewish population city. Izzy was drafted by the Romanian military in 1938. He was demobilized when Hungary and Romania negotiated territory and Oradea was transferred to Hungary. Later he was mobilized into the Hungarian army. Izzy and his wife emigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1948.

Friends suggested either British Columbia or New Zealand, John contacted both governments; B.C. responded first, that decided him to come to BC. Bill applied for various jobs after finishing a typing course, was declined by Imperial Bank of Commerce because he was Jewish, applied and was hired as junior clerk with an insurance company. He has been in insurance since Jan. 1953. Met his wife, Noemi, at a young adult group that met every Sunday night at the JCC. Talks about “Vancouver Diaspora” and the Vancouver Jewish Community.
