Jessie Anne Allman

Oral history interview with Jessie Anne Allman. Jessie worked for 'Children's Aid Society' and the Hadassah, helping to establish over 20 new chapters in Vancouver and Saskatchewan. Worked with the Jewish Family Service Agency.

Jessie's mother started the 'Quick Help Society' and was a member of the Hadassah.

Sam Lipson

Oral history interview with Sam Lipson, who was born in Russia in 1913 but moved to Romania in 1920. When Sam's father received Canadian citizenship in 1930, he changed the family name from Lipshitz to Lipson.

Fannie Samuels

Oral history interview with Fannie Samuels who was born on the along the Prussian border of Poland in 1896 and emigrated to Winnipeg in 1905. Fannie was involved in the Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah and Golden Agers. She moved to Vancouver in 1971, two years after her husband died.

Sam Rothstein

Oral history interview with Sam Rothstein who was born in Russia, 1921. His family left Russia due to anti-semitism and post-revolution fallout, despite his father’s success in the lumber business. His father was Yisrael Leib and his mother was Elka Raisel. They settled in Vancouver because that’s where the rest of his family had chosen to live when they had arrived years before. He attended UBC for undergraduate studies and did a joined honours program in French and English and completed his masters there in French and English. He did his PhD at Berkeley and then got a teaching fellowship at the University of Washington in 1942 as a French teacher. He was drafted into the Canadian military during WWII. He served in counterintelligence. He was shipped to England in June, 1944 and then to Italy, Belgium and then stopped in Holland. While finishing his service, he came across a Librarianship pamphlet. He had money for the first time in his life and felt it was time for a change as he felt distance from the idea of being a French professor. He was invited to the faculty of the University of Manitoba as a French Professor but decided to go to Berkeley instead to become a Librarian, doing his PhD in Illinois. UBC offered him a job while he was briefly on return to Vancouver. He met his wife Miriam in 1948/49 through youth group activities at the JCC, they wed and then moved to Illinois to do his PhD, which he received in 1954 while Miriam worked as the dietician for the men’s residence. In 1961, he became the acting director of the UBC libraries. He also started the library school at UBC that same fall. Their daughter Linda was born in 1955 and Sharon was born in 1957. They were members of Beth Israel and Miriam was active in Hadassah. Sam served as an advisor to Hillel and joined the board at the JCC and eventually became president from 1970-1972. He served as one of the vice presidents of Jewish Congress.

Dr. Lloyd Mallin

Oral history interview with Dr. Lloyd Mallin who was born in Saskatchewan in 1920. He received degree in Dentistry from the University of Alberta.

Naomi Frankenburg

Oral history interview with Naomi Frankenburg (1926-2015) detailing her life in Canada and her involvement with various organizations within the Vancouver Jewish community. Naomi was born in London, England and immigrated to Vancouver, BC in July 1959 with her husband, Dennis Frankenburg and their first four children, Robert Frankenburg (b. 1948), Ruth Frankenburg (b. 1950), Francis Frankenburg (b. 1952), and Lucy Frankenburg (b. 1955). Her fifth and youngest child, Charles Frankenburg, was born in Vancouver in 1960. Naomi describes herself as a passionate Zionist and recounts the anti-Semitism that was occurring in Europe. Naomi describes Dennis Frankenburg as a businessman and accountant who managed an import and export business in Vancouver.

Amongst the numerous leadership roles she undertook, she was the founding president of King David High school, formerly known as Maimonides Secondary School. Naomi recounts her leadership positions in various organizations, in particular her time as a member and as national president of Hadassah-WIZO. Naomi became known for her public speaking skills and fundraising skills, which she exercised in various fundraising roles, such as chairing the Hadassah Bazaar, a campaign that supports women and children in Israel. Other notable organizations Naomi discusses her involvement in include the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, the Jewish National Fund, the Beth Israel Sisterhood, the National Council of Jewish Women, and the BC Forest.

Naomi summarizes her children’s accomplishments and lives chronologically, starting with Robert Frankenburg, the eldest, who served in the Israeli Defense Forces, has a Doctorate in Public Administration, and is the father of six children. Ruth, the second eldest, studied draftsmanship, has two children and is a business owner. Francis, her third child, Naomi describes as a leading expert in schizophrenia in the United States and lectures throughout the world. Lucy, her fourth child completed her education in computer studies, has three children and teaches physical education. Charles, Naomi’s youngest child, served in the Israeli Defense Forces, studied photography, and moved on to a career as a tour guide in Israel.

Ronnie Tessler

Oral interview with Ronnie Tessler. Interviewed by Gene Gerber. Tessler was born in 1944 in Saskatchewan. She speaks about growing up in Winnipeg, her family, her photography, and her contributions to the Jewish community through her work with Louis Brier, Soviet Jewry Advocacy and Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre.

Blossom Wine

Oral history interview with Blossom Wine who was born in Saskatchewan. Involved in Hadassah and active in active in B’nai Brith. After her husband passed away she became a travel agent and saw the development of Israel over many continuous years.
