Note for this slide reads: "Phyllis decided to get her hair done. It was the largest beauty shop I have ever seen. A cut was about 75 cents (and shampoo). Manicurists - they wanted to do my nails but I decided to take a picture. Manicure was about 40 cents".

Separated from China by Tien Shan mountains."

Note: Intourist is the former official state travel agency of the Soviet Union. Alma-Ata is now called Almaty and has not been the capital of Kazakhstan since 1997.
